The BERLIN project is excited to welcome Dr. Paolo Bonetti and Dr. Serena Tagliacozzo, who joined the team between December 2025 and January 2026. Their work will contribute to strengthening the Machine Learning and risk perception expertise of the team.

Paolo Bonetti
Paolo Bonetti is a postdoctoral researcher at Politecnico di Milano. He holds a PhD in Information Technology and a BSc and MSc in Mathematical Engineering from the same university. During his PhD, he developed interpretable and causal machine learning methods for complex environmental systems, with applications in climate science, including drought detection.
Within BERLIN, Paolo contributes to the development of AI methods that combine interpretability, causality, and behavioral modeling. His work focuses on Inverse Reinforcement Learning to uncover and generalize decision-making patterns from observed data. By integrating these approaches, he aims to support more transparent and robust models for understanding and addressing climate-related challenges.

Serena Tagliacozzo
Serena Tagliacozzo is a researcher in risk perception and behavior at Politecnico di Milano and Associate Editor of Frontiers in Disaster Communication. She previously worked at the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, contributing to projects on disaster communication, gender equality, and energy transition. She holds a PhD in Disaster Risk Reduction from University College London and a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Naples Federico II.
Within BERLIN, Serena investigates the social and behavioral dimensions of climate risk perception and decision-making under uncertainty. Using mixed qualitative and quantitative methods, she studies how water system operators and stakeholders within the WEFE Nexus shape and respond to risk.
